THE PEOPLE OF THE MEKONG

The people of the Mekong Region are as diverse as the region itself. From farming and hunting the steep mountain slopes to tending the endless rice paddies of the Mekong River valley and it’s tributaries to fishing in it’s the muddy waters, each people group and village has a distinct character, history, and culture. There are hundreds of unreached people groups in the region and each one holds a unique challenge to those bringing Gospel of Christ Jesus to them.

Whether they are busy urban dwellers in one of the few cities and trading centers or simple farmers in one of the many remote and isolated villages of bamboo and thatched huts, the people of the Mekong Region have one characteristic that binds them together;  They live in one of the least reached areas on the planet.

Most villages have no memory or record of someone bringing the message of hope to them for many generations, if ever. Most people have never met an evangelist or missionary, seen a Bible or even heard the name, “Jesus”.

An important part of the preparation to reach each people group is having a clear understanding of the people, their history and culture and the potential barriers to effectively reaching them with the Gospel of Christ Jesus.
